Mulch Application
Mulching your plants keeps them healthy by eliminating the competition between roots and turf, conserving soil moisture, and moderating soil temperature. Ideally, you should apply mulch beneath the entire tree canopy at a depth that doesn’t exceed 4”. If you’re mulching a shallow-rooted shrub or perennial, 2” is an acceptable depth.
You should avoid solid masses of groundcover while mulching to maintain optimal tree growth. Too much mulch can result in insects, diseases, and more issues.
Spring Defoliation
Defoliation is the process of losing leaves. When trees lose their leaves, it eliminates food production, weakens the integrity of the tree, reduces growth capabilities, and results in pale leaves and branch dieback. The effects of defoliation range from slightly weakening the tree to completely killing it.
If defoliation occurs early in the growing season, the tree will likely die. The tree will weaken itself by trying to refoliate, leaving it susceptible to a variety of other issues. You can avoid these problems through pruning, fertilization, and regular watering.
Young Tree Care
The highest rate of tree loss can be found in trees that are within their first three years of being planted. Losing these trees can be preventable with the right care.
Proper young tree care includes watering at the right time in the right way; you should apply water to the original root ball and surrounding soil once or twice per week during dry periods. This frequency can vary depending on the weather and soil moisture. Additionally, you can care for your young trees by applying mulch so that it is never in contact with the tree trunk, pest control, and fertilization.
Mature Tree Care
As trees get older, they become more susceptible to decline. Through maintaining stable conditions, avoiding root system disturbances, and proper pruning, you can ensure older trees have the structural integrity they need to thrive. Foliage removal is only recommended when absolutely necessary.

Shearing is the process of using manual or powered hedge shears to remove a portion of new growth each year. This alters its natural form and creates a rigid appearance that grows from year to year. It is difficult to manage size, health, and appearance through shearing alone, so we recommend it for formal gardens only.
Late summer and fall shearing can result in winter injury, so always consult a certified arborist.
Foliar Disease Management
Foliar disease is a common springtime disease caused by fungi. You can determine whether or not your tree has been infected from a few warning signs including:
- Discoloration or dead spots
- Unusual coatings
- Browning or yellowing
- Bumps or pustules
